Join a Real Estate Company
The first step in becoming a real estate agent is to join a reputable real estate company. This will provide you with a platform to learn and gain valuable experience in the industry. It is essential to choose a company that shares your values and offers support and mentorship as you navigate through the early stages of your career.
Register at the PPRA as a Candidate Property Practitioner (Previously know as Intern Agent).
To become a real estate agent in South Africa, you must register as a Candidate Property Practitioner with the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority (PPRA) (Previously known as the EAAB). This registration is mandatory and ensures that you comply with industry regulations and adhere to the highest professional standards.
Start with Training
Once you have registered with the PPRA, it is time to begin your training. This involves several stages:
Office Induction
Industry Induction
12-Month Internship
This is a mandatory one-year internship that provides you with hands-on experience in the real estate field. During this time, you must complete the following:
Logbook to be completed (practical workplace experience) – Document your practical workplace experiences in a logbook to demonstrate your competency in various aspects of real estate.
Qualification: FETC: Real Estate NQF4 – to be certified by SSETA – Complete the Further Education and Training Certificate in Real Estate (NQF Level 4), a nationally recognized qualification certified by the Services Sector Education and Training Authority (SSETA).
Write the PDE4 exam within 2 years after obtaining the NQF4.
After completing your internship and obtaining the NQF4 qualification, you must pass the Professional Designation Examination for Property Practitioners (PDE4) within two years.
Upgrade to Non-Principal Property Practitioner (Previously known as Non-Principal Full Status Agent)
Upon passing the PDE4 exam, you can now upgrade your registration with the PPRA to a Non-Principal Property Practitioner.
Commence with CPD (Continuous Professional Development)
(Optional) If you wish to proceed to become a Principal Propery Practioner (Previously known as Principal Agent):
Qualification: NC: Real Estate NQF5 – to be certified by SSETA
To become a Principal Property Practitioner, you must complete the National Certificate in Real Estate (NQF Level 5), also certified by SSETA.
Register a firm (Business Property Practitioner – BPP) at the PPRA to be upgraded to Principal.
Once you have obtained the NQF5 qualification, you can register a firm with the PPRA as a Business Property Practitioner (BPP) to upgrade your status to Principal Property Practitioner.
Write the PDE5 exam within 2 years after registering the BPP
Commence with CPD for Principal Property Practitioners
